Feature Brick Product - Bentonite

Do you or someone you know have trouble with containing water in ponds or reservoirs? A little known product is called Bentonite. Bentonite is a natural swelling clay used to seal the sides and bottom of earthen water tanks and lakes, or as a core-filling material in dams or levees to prevent leakage. This use of swelling of clays for water blocking dates back to ancient times.

More and more, home and business owners are choosing to build ponds, fountains, water falls, and flowing water ways to add to the comfort and beauty around their homes and businesses. This rapidly growing trend in decorative water features calls for safe and effective products.

National® Western Bentonite can be used for water sealing; Lakes, Dams, Earth-fill Dams, Canals, Storage Basins, Concrete Reservoirs, Farm Ponds, Drainage ditches, and Irrigation Ditches. Bentonite can also be used to seal cracks in retaining walls.

Bentonite has been used for everything from stopping leaks during construction on Dams acrossed the Columbia River to blocking water seepage in setting foundation piers in a bridge.

Premixing Bentonite with earth sand or clay gives exceptional results. When Bentonite is added to the core walls of earth filled dams and levees it provides an extra measure of waterproofing.

Other benefits to using Bentonite are that it creates a permanent waterproof seal for concrete reservoirs and canals if mixed with concrete when construction is underway. When water can not be drained from a reservoir or canal, Bentonite can still be used in several ways. One option is to scatter dry Bentonite on the surface of still water, so it will sink to the bottom creating a film. Another application is to pump through mixing tanks to the sides and bottom of the tank to give a more localized treatment.

There are various grades of Bentonite available for commercial use. At Hamilton Parker we offer, the Standard is ground to a particle size of 200 mesh. And the Granular grade, which has an average particle size of 40 mesh.
