A Brief History of Hamilton Parker Company
Serving Columbus since 1934
In the 1930’s, Hamilton and Parker knew their company,
Hamilton-Parker Fuel and Supply, was about to fold under the pressure
of the Great Depression. In 1933, it was purchased by I.H. Schlezinger and Sons Company.
To keep the same customer base, the company’s name
remained the same.
Alvin Lewin worked as a laborer in a foundry in Dayton and was married to I.H. Schlezinger’s daughter, Gertrude. Alvin and Gertrude were brought to Columbus to run the company. In 1934, they purchased the firm from I.H. Schlezinger and Sons Company.
During the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s, the company’s focus was selling coal, with a small building supply and foundry supply business. The coal business had dwindled by the late 1950’s, and Al had a new partner to help him pursue construction supply sales - his son, Milton. Milton joined
the firm full-time in 1960.
In 1959, Al and Gertrude Lewin bought the land on which the company was located, and
began building a new facility in 1960. That was the same year the firm incorporated and changed its name to Hamilton Parker
Company.
From this point forward, diversification became HP’s approach under Milton’s leadership. HP added Brick in the 1960’s, Prefab Fireplaces in the1970’s, Tile in the1980’s, and Garage Doors in the 1990’s. In 1997 HP opened the Delaware Location to meet the needs north of Columbus.
The year 2000 brought a huge transition, the relocation of the Columbus
Location from Vine Street to Leonard Avenue. In 2001 yet another change, a 3rd Generation of family moved up, Adam Lewin became President,
and purchased the company in 2005. Milton remained Chairman of the company until his passing in 2006.
Today, Hamilton Parker Company continues to be one of the leading
suppliers of building materials to the central Ohio area and beyond.
