Q: Should I seal Unglazed Porcelain Tile?

A: In regard to sealing, It is impossible to make a blanket that all unglazed porcelain requires a penetrating-type sealer. However a lot of unglazed porcelain should be sealed, especially when installed in food or high traffic areas. The only way that you can truly determine the need is to test by exposing the tile to liquid food contaminants for several hours, followed by wiping up contaminants
and cleaning with a neutral ph cleaner. Another important test would be to soil the tile by rubbing in common dirt contaminants, followed by immediate cleaning with a neutral ph cleaner. History has shown that dirt seems to fill surface pores on some porcelain tile. A premium penetrating sealer can help with both concerns if the tile exhibits need for protection.

Both Aqua Mix “Ultra-Solv” and “Sealer’s Choice Gold” will work well, but it is agreed that “Ultra-Solv” will work with an easier application process due to the extremely low tile porosity of the tile and the fact that “Ultra Solv” uses smaller molecules than the “Sealer’s Choice”. Aqua Mix recommends sealing the tile with one coat prior to grouting and applying a second coat after grouting. This assures the tile is properly sealed and also seals the grout.
