Porcelain Tile

A denser alternative to ceramic, porcelain tile provides a durability and ease of maintenance unmatched by other flooring materials. The choices you will find in porcelain tile are vast. With styles that recreate the looks of natural stone, travertine, metal, and even fabric there is an option for every aesthetic. Sizes range from the traditional 12”x12” tile to the increasingly popular 18”x18”, 24”x24” and even larger. Colors are also abundant when it comes to porcelain. Many are what are referred to as “color-body tiles” which means the color you see on top of the tile penetrates the entire tile body. Simply put if you chip a tile, which isn’t easy to do, the color you see in the chip is the same as the color on the surface of the tile. This is ideal for heavy traffic areas such as kitchens, entries, mudrooms, and even bathrooms.

While all manufacturers’ recommendations should be considered, generally speaking a porcelain tile will not require a penetrating sealer to protect its surface. Also many tiles are available with what’s known as a “rectified” edge. This means the tiles are manufactured with the ability to be installed with a minimal grout joint, further strengthening their low maintenance appeal.
