As one of the oldest tile-making traditions in the world, Zellige tiles have adorned mosques and palaces for centuries. The Mistral collection reinterprets the heritage of Zellige tiles for the modern day. Tile makers in Fez, Morocco, employ time-honored methods that have been perfected and passed down over generations. The individually hand-chiseled tile pieces bridge the past and the present by marrying classic techniques of tile making with modern patterns and colors. Unique to Mistral, lead-free Italian glazes are applied to the Moroccan tiles to achieve a striking, fresh palette curated for today’s distinctive interiors and exteriors.
All Mistral mosaic patterns are available in all 6 colorway blends featuring a unique use of lead-free Italian glazes for a striking, fresh palette. Field and liner are also available in certain colors used in the blends.
Mistral tiles are Moroccan tiles made completely by hand in the same way authentic Zellige tiles have been made for centuries. This artistic tradition encapsulates a genuine expression of handmade tiles that results in “imperfect” but beautifully unique tiles that vary one from the other in surface, edge, and color. See our “Note on Material” below for more information.
(Color note: All colorways contain multiple color variations between pieces.)
Each Mistral mosaic and field tile will vary from the next. The following characteristics should be
expected:
Imperfections on tile face
Chips off surface off surface of the glaze that reveal clay beneath
Dips and bumps on tile surface
Thickness variation between pieces
Uneven edging
Wide color/shade variation between pieces and batches
Glaze pooling
Lime pops that expose the substrate
Variation between samples and tiles received is possible as handmade techniques of glazing make shade and color variation an inherent part of Mistral, and all authentic Zellige tiles.
